Damn!

That’s what you are going to say when your computer hard drive dies! (I know it’s a strong word, but that is what you are going to say!) You will say this because you have not backed up any of your important computer information. Don’t laugh mobile phone users! I hope you have all of those phone numbers you have in your phone stored somewhere else. Just in case your phone is lost or stolen!

The world runs on information. You run on information. Laptops, PDA’s, Cell phones, Ipod’s, TIVO, USB Flash (thumb) drives, CD’s, DVD’s, etc. These are the devices that fuel our world.  Digitally stored information. It’s all beautiful when it works…

What happens when it breaks down?

For some of us, we just lose phone numbers, term papers, website passwords, music collections, video collections, accounts receivable records, client databases, payroll records, essential email, …. Whoa! This is pretty important stuff! Some of this stuff would shut a small business down for good!

Damn!

There that word is again! I have heard it too many times. As a Technology Consultant, I have had to inform too many clients that their information is lost.  In every case, it was avoidable! All they had to do was backup their critical information.

What Is Critical Information?

Any information that you can not do without is critical information! If you run a business, any info essential to maintaining your business is critical.

What Type of Backup Will I need?

I suggest two levels of redundant backup:

  • Onsite
  • Offsite

Onsite

You should have a copy of all critical information onsite and readily accessible. There are a number of inexpensive techniques that you can use.

External or internal disk drives

CD or DVD backup

Tape Drives (yuk!)

Other Higher tech solutions

With the right programs, you can automate the onsite backup process so that you don’t have to remember to do it.  Let’s face it. You are going to forget to do it. The more you remove the human error factor, the more reliable your backups will be!

Offsite

Now that you have your onsite backup, you should be fine right? WRONG!!! If there is a disaster, what happens to those backups? Right! They get destroyed along with everything else!

You need copies of your copies stored away from your originals.

This is not complicated. You could take your onsite copies home with you. (bad idea because you will forget them sooner or later).  You could automate a backup of your onsite copies to an offsite location. (Best Solution).

Over the coming weeks, you will get more info on backups. Look for a PDF soon  @ KDXTECH.COM/Downloads.
